The Good Shepherd

Catholic Primary School

“I am the Good Shepherd; I know my own and my own know me”. John 10:14"

Branch 4 Desert to Garden

In Branch 4, Desert to Garden, pupils will explore the powerful symbolism in St. John’s account of the final days of Jesus’ earthly life. They will develop knowledge and understanding of how the text reveals deeper meanings about Jesus as the Messiah, and describe the core beliefs that are expressed through these events.

Pupils will make connections between Jesus’ act of washing his disciples' feet, the Holy Thursday Mass, and Christian beliefs about Jesus' humility and service. They will also link the Crucifixion to the Stations of the Cross, reflecting on it as a prayerful journey that recalls Christ’s path to the cross.

Additionally, pupils will consider and discuss the statement, “Jesus had a fair trial,” by comparing and contrasting different viewpoints and using John’s Gospel as evidence. They will also reflect on Lent as a season for transformation, drawing inspiration from these accounts to deepen their understanding and faith.

We have created fantastic double-page spreads, showcasing all our learning from the term about the journey from Desert to Garden.

The Trial of Jesus

Today, we researched whether Jesus's trial was fair or unfair! We discovered that Jesus was tried by both Jewish leaders and the Roman governor, Pilate. Many of us found that the trial had unfair parts, like the Jewish court's proceedings being illegal and Pilate repeatedly saying he found no fault in Jesus, yet still handing Him over because of pressure from the crowd and chief priests , ,. We then brilliantly presented our findings on colourful posters, showing all the reasons we found. Finally, we put our arguments to the test in a lively debate, discussing whether justice was truly served. It was clear that many factors made Jesus's trial far from fair!

Acts of Service

Jesus showed us how to love others by serving them, always putting their needs before His own, which is called Agape love. Just before He left His followers, during the Last Supper, Jesus told them to love each other in the same way He loved them. This means we should treat everyone with kindness and care, just as Jesus did. Today, as followers of Jesus, we are also called to live out this love by helping those who are in need or have been treated unfairly.

The Journey of Lent

Today, we created a visual representation of the journey of Lent, using symbols of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and the cross. The path started at the bottom, representing Ash Wednesday, and ended at the top, symbolizing Easter. We envisioned the path as both a spiritual and physical journey, with various symbols marking the way.
