“I am the Good Shepherd; I know my own and my own know me”. John 10:14"
In Branch 5, we’ll study the Sacrament of Confirmation, one of the three sacraments of initiation in the Church. We’ll explore its roots in scripture, from the words of the prophets to the events in Acts, and learn about Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples. The word “confirmation” means “to strengthen,” and through this sacrament, Christians are strengthened in faith by the power of the Holy Spirit, receiving an increase in the gifts of the Spirit. We’ll discuss the meaning behind each part of the Confirmation ceremony, including the role of the bishop as a successor of the apostles, the laying on of hands, and how this connection traces back to the first apostles.
We’ll also learn about the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit and how they help Christians live out their faith as disciples. By studying the lives of Mary and other saints, we’ll gain a better understanding of discipleship and how these examples inspire us today. Additionally, we’ll explore the symbols of the Holy Spirit and see how they relate to both scripture and the sacrament. Lastly, we’ll look at the Rosary, specifically the glorious mysteries, to reflect on the life of Christ. By the end of this unit, we’ll be able to explain the significance of Confirmation, the symbols and actions within it, and how it helps Christians live a Spirit-filled life.
