The Good Shepherd

Catholic Primary School

“I am the Good Shepherd; I know my own and my own know me”. John 10:14"

Branch 3 Galilee to Jerusalem

By the end of this branch, pupils will recognise and identify key people who encountered Jesus, acknowledging that he holds a special place in religious teachings. They will engage with the Gospel of Luke, retelling stories in various creative forms to deepen their understanding of these religious accounts.

Pupils will make simple connections between Jesus’ mission, as announced in Luke 4:16-19, and the Christian calling to share God’s love with others today. Through examining the story of Zacchaeus, they will ask and answer questions about his transformation after meeting Jesus, helping them think critically about personal change. Additionally, pupils will imagine the experiences of those who met Jesus and explore how encounters with him might have transformed them. Listening to how people celebrate Candlemas will enrich their understanding of faith expressions.

Pupils will be invited to reflect on the meaning of the Good News in their lives, consider how Jesus is a 'light' for all people, and think about ways they can bring light to their families and communities, learning from Jesus' example of care for others.

Pupils will explore the concept of solidarity by focusing on St. Francis of Assisi. They will learn how St. Francis exemplified solidarity by demonstrating love and care for all living things, particularly animals and nature. Through stories and examples from his life, pupils will understand that St. Francis saw all of creation as interconnected and treated every living being with compassion and respect.

Jesus is the light of all nations

The children deepened their understanding of the Bible story of "The Presentation" and the Feast of Candlemas through a thoughtful lesson on Jesus being the light of the world. As they learned about how Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the temple to be presented, they explored the significance of Simeon’s words, recognising Jesus as the light that would bring salvation to all. The lesson then focused on the idea that Jesus is the light, and how each of them can also be a light to others by showing kindness, love, and compassion. Through discussions and activities, the children reflected on ways they could spread light in their own lives—whether by helping a friend, showing care for others, or being a positive influence in their community. This lesson helped the children connect the teachings of Candlemas with practical ways they can live out the message of being a light in the world.

The children explored the Epiphany story, learning about the visit of the three wise men, or kings, to see the newborn Jesus. They listened attentively as the story was read from the Bible, hearing how the kings followed the star to find the baby and brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This helped them understand the significance of the Epiphany as a moment of revelation and the recognition of Jesus as the King. Afterward, the children engaged in creative artwork. The activity allowed them to express their creativity while deepening their connection to the Epiphany story and its important message.
