“I am the Good Shepherd; I know my own and my own know me”. John 10:14"
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to till it and keep it.”
Genesis 2:15
Stewardship of God's Creation is all about caring for the many gifts that God has given to us. These include our environment, our own talents and other resources. All living things are connected so we must use God’s gifts responsibly to meet the needs of everyone, now and in the future.
“Laudato Si’, mi’ Signore” –
“Praise be to you, my Lord”.
Dear Children of the Good Shepherd School,
The earth is God’s gift to us, full of beauty and wonder. And it belongs to everyone. But what we see today is that our common home has never been so hurt and mistreated. We have developed at a greater speed than we could have ever imagined, and have treated the earth like it has an unlimited supply of resources. We have taken more than our fair share from most people on the planet, as well as future generations. We have cut down the earth’s natural forests, polluted the earth’s waters, its land and its air.
The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. We are using more and more polluting fossil fuels which is contributing to climate change. Climate change one of the biggest challenges we face today. Climate change will affect us all, but it will be the poorest communities who will suffer the most. And despite these problems, we are not slowing down on how much we consume and throw away; leaving a trail of waste and destruction. We cannot continue like this. We can change, and we can make a new start.
The whole human family needs to work together to care for our planet earth So that we sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. So let’s put love for the world and love for our neighbours, into action, by living together in harmony, and caring for nature.
The world can’t wait! So let’s make that start today. Play your part to protect our common home.
Love Pope Francis
Since the release of Laudato Si' in May 2015, we have actively embraced its call to care for our common home. Our response includes a range of initiatives focused on environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and the promotion of ecological justice. Over the years, we have celebrated Earth Day, engaged in community clean-ups, and worked to reduce our carbon footprint. These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to living out the principles of Laudato Si', fostering a deeper connection with creation and encouraging others to join in safeguarding the environment for future generations.
On their trip to the travelling crib, Year 2 and Year 3 saved their aluminium foil to be reused at Kite Studios for an art project. This small act helps reduce waste and encourages creative recycling, turning everyday materials into artwork. It’s a great example of the students putting Laudato Si into action by caring for the environment through reusing materials.
Year 6 worked together to create a poem capturing their response to Laudato Si'.
Laudato Si’
Together we gather, in joy and in care,
For Laudato Si’, our call to prayer.
A world that we love, our earth and its skies,
We’re learning to see it with fresh, open eyes.
With printing blocks, brushes, rollers and ink.
We created climate change art, to change the way people think.
Inspired by Young London Print Prize, we artists took part,
Our visions and dreams alive in our hearts.
We’re Clean Air Champions, with Urbanwise here to help,
To continue the fight for skies that yelp.
We took samples of pollution, you’ll be surprised at what we found,
The results were unexpected, but together we can turn it around!
For air we can breathe, for our world – make it pure,
We’ll work hand in hand till change is secure.
Pollution may spread, but we will stand strong,
Together, we’ll correct what’s been wrong for so long.
With hope in our hearts and a vision so clear,
A cleaner, brighter future — we hope to appear.
So let’s stand strong using voices, dreams and art,
At the Good Shepherd, we’ll play our part,
With hands, with minds, with hopeful hearts.
Laudato Si’, we hear the call—
Stewards we will be for all.
Year 6
Our Year 6 pupils excelled in the Young London Print Prize, an award that raises awareness of climate issues through art and promotes stewardship of creation. We’re thrilled to share that two pupils were winners: one received the School Award, and another achieved 2nd Place overall, with her artwork displayed on the iconic lights of Piccadilly Circus and later exhibited at Woolwich Art Gallery.
Through their creativity, our pupils inspire others to protect the planet, reflecting a commitment to sustainability, climate action, and the stewardship of creation. We are proud of their dedication to making a positive impact!
