The Good Shepherd

Catholic Primary School

“I am the Good Shepherd; I know my own and my own know me”. John 10:14"

Branch 3 Galilee to Jerusalem

In Branch 3, we’ll explore the “new law” Jesus gave, which builds on the law of Moses and highlights love and kindness as central to a blessed life. We’ll learn about the Transfiguration, where Jesus appeared with Moses and Elijah, showing his disciples Peter, James, and John how he fulfills both the law and the prophets. We’ll also dive into the Beatitudes, where Jesus describes what it means to live a blessed life, and explore how his teachings call us to love our neighbors. By comparing the Beatitudes with the Ten Commandments and reflecting on one of Jesus’ parables, we’ll see how these teachings guide Christians today.

We’ll also study the Our Father, a prayer that captures the heart of Jesus' message. By looking at each petition, we’ll understand its meaning and how it reflects the core values of the gospel. Through these lessons, we’ll discover how virtues like hope and charity are essential to living out Jesus’ teachings and how prayer can help us connect to God’s love. By the end of this unit, we’ll be able to discuss these ideas in detail, understand the connections between Jesus’ new law and the old, and recognize how these lessons can shape our lives.

Sharing Our Learning from Branch 3

In today’s whole-school assembly, Year 5 shared what we have been learning in RE during Branch 3: Galilee to Jerusalem. We talked about the Beatitudes, the Ten Commandments, the Greatest Commandments, our debates, and relay writing activities. To wrap up, we highlighted the importance of the Beatitudes by singing and dancing to our Beatitude song. We invited everyone in the hall to join in so that we could all remember the eight Beatitudes together!

Parable Relay: Writing Together to Show the Great Commandment

We created parables about the Great Commandment through a relay writing activity, adding to each other’s stories as we moved seats. I learned that loving our neighbours means collaborating, sharing ideas, and showing kindness, just as we did in this activity.

Mardi Gras Fun: Projects, Songs, and Dance!

We dove into the fun and history of Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday) and its connection to Lent! Some of us created awesome projects and shared cool facts with the class, while others got creative by making a Mardi Gras song and teaching us a dance to go with it. It was a lively and educational way to celebrate and learn together!
